A Radiological Study on the Function of the Mucosa of Normal and Inflamed Maxillary Sinuses

Abstract
This study was undertaken to observe the ciliary function of the mucosa of normal and pathological maxillary sinuses following instillation of radioactive chromium into the maxillary sinuses in 111 normal cases (bilateral) and 30 pathological cases. Fifty microcuries of chromium-51 was introduced into the maxillary sinuses through the lateral bony wall of the inferior meatus,. and then radioactivity was measured with scintillation counter over the antrum 1 hr, 3, 6, 24, 4& 72,¢¥ 96, 120, 144, 168, 192, 216 hours after instillation. The radioactivity measured at various time periods was expressed as a ratio to the radioactivity determined at the time of instillation of (51)^Cr.
The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1) There was significant difference between normal and pathologic groups in rate of radioactivity at various time periods. The excretion of radioisotope was significantly prolonged in pathological group.
2) The data obtained with radioisotope study correlated more closely with severity of the destruction of the ciliary epithelium than the roentgenological picture of the antrum.
3) For the determination of maxillary sinus function, the method empolying radioactive isotope was more accurate and simple than serial radiographic examination of the antrum after instillation of contrast media.
The dose of radiation exposed to the patient was also much less with the former method than with the latter.
